Mary-Ann Pouls Wegner
Professor Pouls Wegner received her Ph.D. in Egyptology with a specialization in Egyptian Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania, and has been teaching at the University of Toronto in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations since 2000. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on Ancient Egyptian archaeology, social and political history, culture, and artifacts (utilizing the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum), and also provides students with opportunities to participate in her research through work-study and volunteer initiatives. She has published numerous analyses of artifactual material from Egypt, many of which are available online through her Academia and ResearchGate accounts.
As a member of the Graduate Faculty, Prof. Pouls Wegner is actively involved in graduate research programs in the field of Egyptology and Near Eastern Archaeology and has served on numerous thesis committees in these areas. She supervises students in the MA and Ph.D. programs doing research related to ancient Egyptian archaeology, culture, and social development as well as artifactual data, and is particularly interested in utilizing anthropological approaches to the study of social organization and material culture in the Egyptian context. She has worked closely with doctoral students under her supervision to develop and carry out their own analyses of archaeological material recovered from the excavations under her direction in Egypt.
Prof. Pouls Wegner is the Director of the Toronto Abydos Votive Zone Project, an ongoing archaeological field project under the auspices of the University of Toronto and the University of Pennsylvania-Yale University-Institute of Fine Arts, New York University Expedition to Abydos.
