This multidisciplinary international conference brings together some 75 knowledge producers from diverse disciplinary, geographic, and cultural backgrounds to present and discuss their work on the Indian Ocean’s unique materialities and artistic expressions. The three keynote lectures and 22 conference panels explore the creation, production, and circulation of material culture in various forms including the visual arts, portable objects, manuscripts and maps, ships and navigational instruments, archaeology, landscape, architecture, and the built environment, textiles and dress, photography, and film, as well as the digital and plastic arts.

The conference is convened by Ruba Kana’an, University of Toronto Mississauga; Sarah Fee, Royal Ontario Museum, Zulfikar Hirji, York University, and Sanniah Jabeen, University of Toronto.
