Book Launch: Refik Halid Karay’s “Stories of Exile”
Refik Halid Karay (1888-1965) was a highly influential writer in the late Ottoman and early Republican Turkey, but none of his works have been published in English until now. A group of University of Toronto alumni have turned what was once a student club of literature enthusiasts at the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations into a publishing house, and are now publishing their translation of Karay's short story collection Stories of Exile.
Come join the founders of Translation Attached publishing house, U of T alumni Nefise Kahraman, Karolina Dejnicka, and Yasemin Mangal in a discussion of Karay's life and times, the process of literary translation, and the challenges they faced along the way.
Please note that the event will be followed by a reception at the Bancroft Building 200B. RSVP is required on the RSVP form.
Members of the Seminar and U of T communities can also attend the event online, on Zoom. Please also note that Zoom registration is required on the Zoom registration page.
* This event is sponsored by the Department of Near and Middle East Civilizations and the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.
