NMC welcomes Dr. Adrien Zakar, who is jointly appointed as Assistant Professor of Late Ottoman History and History of Science and Technology in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations (NMC) and the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST).
Dr. Zakar presently holds a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Stanford Humanities Center, and he is a lecturer in the Department of History at Stanford University. Dr. Zakar completed his doctoral studies in Middle Eastern History at Columbia University in 2018. He is a historian of the Late Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East with a research focus in political, social, and cultural histories, science and technology studies, war studies, and spatial history.
Dr. Zakar will join the IHPST and NMC communities on July 1, 2021, contributing to NMC’s growing course offerings in Turkish Studies and the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program, and to the IHPST’s offerings in global histories of cartography, empire, science, and technology.
